Islam, a interesting religion. started by a merchant prophet named mohamed. lets call him Moe. Moe was considered crazy by many when he started preaching. Moes older wife, lets call her la vieja. la vieja was his number one fan. she also was his boss. this was a good way of haveing his voyages sponsored. soon Moe had a large following and got going. people liked Moes messages. but like everything words get changed and look at it now, boom, boom, bang, bang

Relationships with the West
The relationship between Islam and Christianity has been a controversial one.
Although Islam encourages the study of the prophets of all religions, Christianity for the most part does not. So as the muslims began to spread towards the West, the Church decided to declare them infidels, and spread lies and rumors about them. Like that they worshipped Muhammed as a god, and that muslims were violent etc. Lately other civilizations have more respect for Islam, and have began to study it more.

-Islam combined spiritual and secular power uner one ruler. This helped unify the warring tribes of the area. Islam expanded during the centuries after the Prophet's death.
-Ummah became a community that spread from Africa to hte Indonesia.
-Muhammad's non-violent takeover of Mecca occurred only two years before he died. Whe he died, a newly converted Qurayshite, Khalid ibn al-Walid, commanded a series of campaigns that within seven had claimed the entire Arabian Peninsula and Syria for Islam.

pana was fun retreat was fun. the change in environment was needed. some of the activities were good while others were to long, way to long. the heat was missed at night there was no coastal weather. i would have liked the sun to have heated things up more.

Reflection About Retreat '09

I liked having the retreat at the lake especially because of the view (that's why we chose the hotel.) Some things were too long, like trivia, but in general I had a lot of fun being with my friends and away from school. Yes, the rooms were a little nasty, but we were barely in them and I think we really needed a change from our old hotel in Mazate. 

I liked the small groups, but the fault in that was that you wouldn't necessarily go where you wanted to but wherever there was space. 

I had a lot of fun. it was the best last retreat ever!

3rd quarter world religions

Shinto

• has no founder, orthodox canon of sacred literature, and no explicit code of ethical requirements.
• scholars believe that the written chronicles of Shintoism were influenced by Buddhist, Confucian, Korean, and Chinese thought.
• they believe matter floated around in space until it came together and gave birth to several "kami" or spirits. Kami literally means "that which is above." They include both good and evil spirits. Shrines are built to honor the Kami. 
• very iconoclastic
• rites are conducted with great care
• one of the biggest annual festivals is New Year's
• water is used for the purification in powerful ascetic practices
• indigenous to Japan

Zoroastrianism

• comes from Iran
• one of the earliest monotheistic religions
• the "wise men" from Matthew are believed by many to have Zoroastrian Magi
• today, India is the center of Zoroastrian population
• At death, Zoroastrians believe each of us is judged according to the total goodness or evil of our thoughts, words, and deeds
• men and women are treated equally in this religion
• it is an ancient way of combating evil with personal goodness.

Daoism

• it's name was created by scholars
• Dao is the "original, unnamable force"
• final goal of Daoism is immortality
• Daoism is a mystical reality that cannot be conceived or grasped by the mind

Confucianism

• Confucius is known as Master Kong and the teacher of the arts of governing
• Confucius did not speak much about the unseen reality, but preferred to focus on the hear and now
• Women were asked to offer themselves in total sacrifice to others
• It is among one of the 5 religions now permitted in China

Judaism

• God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th. He then created Adam and Eve. One version says that God created Adam and Eve as equals, but another says Eve was just created to accompany Adam. Eve is the reason humans were kicked out of the Garden of Eden, for she ate from the forbidden tree of Good and Evil. But Jews trace their origins to Abraham. Abraham had two sons from which came the 12 Jewish tribes. God made a covenant with Noah that he would not flood the whole world again and later with Abraham and his descendants. 
  
  
  God then asked his people to only praise Him as their one and only God. When they were freed from many years as slaves in Egypt, Moses, the Jewish leader, went to talk to God and receive the new commandments from Him. The Jews thought he was not coming back, so they began making an idol out of gold to praise him. This angered God and he punished them. Then God instructed Moses to make the Arc of the Covenant. 
  
  
  Several prophets warned their people not to praise other gods, but they would always disobey. Many kings and prophets have come, but the country of Israel did not "exist" until 1948.

they start with joseph in egypt and then became slaves then they were free by moses and wondered in the desert for 40 years and finally found the promise land

The creation story talks about God having no beginning and no end. He created the world in seven days. Then the story goes on talking about how Adam and Eve were exiled from the garden of Eden because they disobeyed God. Through the old Testament the people are continually turning away from God and being punished for this. Usually they are exiled and loose their land, so they have to wander or are enslaved. There are many stories like the stories of Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David which relate to the theme of disobedience and suffering the consequences.

So, in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Then they sinned, and it all goes down hill from there...

Noah and his arc.

Then Moses comes along, his mom put him in a basket and put him in the river, but the Pharaoh's daughter adopts him, so he is raised as an egyptian prince, then finds out he's a hebrew, kills an egyptian and flees.

A burning bush talks to him, tells him to go talk to pharoh and set hebrews free.

He takes aaron along to talk, many plagues have to be sent to the egyptians before Pharaoh says yes. The last plague involves the first son dying, but hebrews put blood over their doors, and this later is called, (and is extremely important for the hebrews) as Passover. 

Then they all leave, they open the red sea, pass through it, egyptians die in it.

THey then spend 40 years in the desert waiting for the promised land. 

God gives them mana to survive. 

They are grateful, then come the 10 commandments with Abraham.

And they finally reach the promised land. 

And that's how the cookie crumbles.

Obama Becoming President

Lucia thinks that Obama did a really good job addressing that the economy is in trouble he didn’t sugarcoat things, which was good, and he is a really good speaker but once more he did not specify on how he will change things.
Lucy liked the way he was honest with the people, he addressed current problems instead of ignoring them, but did not specify how change was going to be made.
Amy thinks that he used powerful words by quoting ‘fathers of the nation’ and it made him seem very powerful like he can get the job done.
Ingrid thinks that he is saying what any other politician would say (what people want/need to hear); it is only a big deal because he is African American. The political party used this to motivate voters. Obama will just be the “African American leading figure” , but he wont really have anything to do with actually leading the country.
Liz really liked the speech and thought that he has potential to make huge changes in the United States.
Clara doesn’t think people shouldn’t make such a big deal about Obama he is just another president and she will not believe anything until she actually sees the change he promises.
Mr. Macmarlin thinks that the change in politics in the U.S. could be a positive thing, (ying and Yang) he thinks he is a good speaker and the things he has outlined, as goals are good but whether or not he can accomplish them is different.
Sofia thinks that even though this really is a historical event, and it is very important, people are giving Obama “too much credit” simply by being African American, he is a great speaker and sometimes that can trick you and make you believe him, but I think people should not get carried away by words, like Clara I think that “ver para creer”
John thinks yesterday was a really important day but he still wants to “wait and see” what will come out of everything.

All together I believe we are all happy and excited to witness this historical event, we realize that it is a big deal that the 44th president of the United States is African American. Apart from that, we do not know if the results of his presidency will be good, some of us are hoping he fulfills their expectations; others that think differently are crossing our fingers so that he proves us wrong. Either way only time will tell.
